I laughed out loud when I saw what this weed can do. This weed is so powerful it can actually destroy buildings!
Its known as ‘Japanese Knotweed’, and apparently it can squeeze through any weakness in a property and then as it evolves, badly harm the construction of the property, often resulting in demolition.
The pictures on this Japanese Knotweed site display examples of it plugging its way through some unlucky chap’s floor, and in another case shoving between the main house and the conservatory.
I know I shouldn’t laugh, but I couldn’t help it. On The Face Of It it is so hard to kill that some homes need to be ripped down and the land treated with toxic chemicals before anything may be reconstructed on it.
That made me somewhat engaged, “What is Japanese Knotweed“, I said to myself, so I dug into our old friend Google to educate myself.
More comedy ensued. The irony, the ‘oh so bitter irony’! This weed that is so hard to kill that it is classified as a dangerous waste when you try to dispose of it, can be EATEN!!!!
Much of the population of the world foodless, and we have a weed that thrives anyplace, develops quickly and can’t be wiped out easily, and rather than planting it to help clear the food issues, we have teams of experts striving to invent lower cost and better ways to obliterate it.
You couldn’t make it up.
